Hello Young Adventurers!
I am so excited to have you join me on this journey around the world! Together, we’re going to explore new places, meet new people, and learn more about this amazing planet we live on. So buckle up, grab a snack, and let’s go!
For those who do not know me, my name is Cody Weavil. I have been an elementary music teacher in North Carolina for the past four and a half years at three amazing schools. In my classroom we learned how to sing, dance, and play all sorts of instruments (My favorite being ukuleles!)! But, what I loved most about being a teacher was getting to show my students the world through music. Each week my young adventurers and I would travel together on GoogleEarth and get lost in the backroads of the world while experiencing local musics, folksongs, and instruments. With each new country we’d explore, their eyes would light up more. They began to dream about places they could visit one day. They asked incredible questions about why things are different, and then made the connections that we actually aren’t so different after all.
After 4.5 years of showing my kids the world and encouraging them to go see it, I decided I had to finally put my money where my mouth is. A teacher’s first job is to be a student- to constantly learn and grow in order to become a better educator. And so begins this journey to travel the world. To learn about the cultures I visit firsthand to help me grow into a more accepting and understanding teacher. To record and document local musics and instruments to one day bring back into a classroom and my future adventurers. To show my kids that they, in fact, can go and follow any dream they have if they work hard.
Get ready, friends. This is going to be a whirlwind, and I cannot wait to bring you along. The journey begins in The Netherlands in Europe on August 12th. I’ll see you there!
Have Courage, and Be Kind,
Mr. Weavil
